In addition to natural beauty, Uttarakhand is also famous for its religious and mythological tales. Located in Rudraprayag district, Triyuginarayan temple is one of the most popular religious sites of Uttarakhand. It is believed that the marriage of Lord Shiva and Mata Parvati had taken place at this very site.
Locals believe that the holy Fire, which has been igniting inside the temple for several ages, had witnessed their marriage. That’s why this place has been given the name of Triyuginarayan. It is said that Lord Visnu had performed all the matrimonial rites as Mata Parvati’s brother in this marriage; where as Lord Brahma had performed the duty of priest. One can find Rudra kund(channel) along with Vishnu kund and Brahma kund here.
The main source of these three channels is Saraswati kund. People believe that the water of this channel had originated from Lord Vishnu’s navel. There is also one temple of Lord Vishnu and goddess Laxmi here. This place is famous for curing women’s infertility. It is believed that the ash of this hearth (agnikund) helps in keeping the marriage life happy.
The devotees who put dry logs of wood into it and thereafter consume its ash, they never come across any difficulty pertaining to their marriage life. Surrounded all over with greenery, the beauty of this temple always soothes one’s eyes. The architecture style of this temple is very much similar to Kedarnath temple. A big fair is organized every year at this place.
As per tales, this place was the capital of Raja Himvat during the ancient period. It is believed that Mata Parvati had originated at this place as the daughter of Himavat. Once Mata Parvati had proposed Lord Shiva for marriage, but He did not want to knot himself in this marriage ritual. Being persistent about her decision, the goddess Parvati went to Gauri kund and sat on severe penance, at which Lord Shiva got pleased and ultimately agreed upon marrying her. Gauri kund is located at just 5 kms away from Triyuginarayan temple.
