Built at an altitude of 2000 metres from sea level, the temple of Anusuya Devi is situated in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. Located at about six kilometres away from the district division, it is dedicated to the goddess Anusuya. This temple is the centre of faith for Hindus. Here, devotees from far-away areas come to offer prayers to Mata. Dattatreya Jayanti is celebrated every year at this sacred place, which is nestled amidst dense forests. On this occasion, the Naudi fair is also organized and a large number of devotees gather here. The devotees bring with them the decorated god palanquins. This fair concludes when the devotees orbit around the temple with palanquins on their heads. There is an Ashram of Atri Muni at a short distance from here. The Anusuya goddess has been given the status of Shiromani Sati. According to one mythological saying, the childless couples are blessed with fertility if they chant mantras along with performing Yagya at the temple.
According to a mythological tale prevalent about this temple, Maharishi Atri, the son of Lord Brahma and one amongst seven sages had chosen this place for performing penance. His wife Anusuya constructed one small hermitage and started living here. She was pious and the news of her chastity propagated throughout the whole universe. At this, Mata Parvati, Lakshami and Saraswati had developed enmity for her. They sent Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma to test the purity of Mata Anusuya Devi. Though the three gods were not willing to go but after being compelled again and again by their beloved wives, they went to the Ashram of Anusuya Devi in the guise of saints asked for some food. But when she came up with food in front of them, the Tridevas put forward the pre-condition that they would accept the food only if she could distribute the food in naked position.
On hearing this condition, Anusuya Devi was filled with anxiety and she thought of her husband while keeping her eyes closed. Then she got the divine vision about the gods’ actual identity in the camouflage of saints. Then Anusuya Devi also came up with a pre-requisite that if they could become her sons in the form of babies, then she would agree to their demand. Accepting the condition of Anusuya Devi, the three of them transformed themselves into small babies and she too fed them in a naked position. After this incidence, all the three started living with Anusuya like her sons. When even after a long time they did not get back to their homes then Mata Parvati, Lakshmi and Saraswati visited the Ashram with anxiety and sought forgiveness from Anusuya Devi. At their appeal, the mother Anusuya enabled the gods to re-attain their original form. Since then, the mother Anusuya has been known as the Mata Sati Anusuya.
